FinOps (Cloud Financial Operations)

FinOps is a cloud financial management practice that brings engineering, finance and business teams together to make cloud spending visible, allocate it to owners and optimise it continuously against business value.

FinOps, short for cloud financial operations, is an operational framework and cultural practice that brings engineering, finance and business teams together to manage the variable cost of cloud services. Because cloud resources are billed by usage and can be created by any engineer, FinOps makes costs visible, allocates them to teams and products, and turns spending decisions into shared, data-driven trade-offs between cost, speed and quality. The FinOps Foundation, part of the Linux Foundation, publishes the FinOps Framework.

The framework describes an iterative lifecycle of three phases: inform, optimise and operate. Typical activities include tagging resources for cost allocation, showback or chargeback to business units, budgeting and forecasting, cost anomaly alerts, rightsizing over-provisioned instances, switching off non-production environments out of hours and buying commitment discounts such as reserved instances and savings plans. Spot capacity, which the provider can reclaim at short notice, can cut costs for interruptible work such as batch jobs.

Unit economics, such as cost per transaction, per customer or per inference request, are more meaningful than total spend because they show whether growth is efficient. AI workloads make FinOps more important, since GPU instances are among the most expensive cloud resources. The FinOps Foundation's FOCUS specification defines a common format for billing data across providers, simplifying multi-cloud cost reporting.
