GitOps

GitOps is a way of operating infrastructure and applications in which a Git repository holds the declared desired state and automated agents continuously reconcile running systems to match it, so every change is a reviewed commit.

GitOps is an operating model in which a Git repository holds the declarative desired state of infrastructure and applications, and automated agents keep the running environment in line with it. Changes are made by commits and pull requests rather than direct commands. An agent running in or near the target environment continuously compares actual state with the repository, pulls in approved changes and corrects any drift it detects.

GitOps is most common with Kubernetes, where tools such as Argo CD and Flux, both CNCF graduated projects, synchronise cluster resources from Git. It gives a full audit trail of who changed what and when, simple rollback by reverting a commit, and a consistent way to manage many clusters, including fleets of edge clusters at remote sites.

The CNCF OpenGitOps project summarises the approach in four principles: declarative, versioned and immutable, pulled automatically and continuously reconciled. Secrets need special handling, such as encrypted manifests or external secret stores, because plain secrets must never be committed. Repository access controls and branch protection become critical, since write access to the repository effectively means write access to production.
