Gemba
Gemba is a Japanese term meaning the actual place, used in lean management for the location where value is created, such as the shop floor, and for the practice of going there to observe processes and solve problems with the people who do the work.
Lean thinking holds that problems are best understood where they occur rather than in offices or from reports. A gemba walk is a structured visit by managers or engineers to observe work as it actually happens, ask questions, understand standards and listen to operators. The related principle of genchi genbutsu, going to see for oneself, is one of the core values of the Toyota Way.
Gemba walks are used to verify that standard work is followed, to spot waste and safety hazards, to support kaizen, and to build trust between management and front-line teams. Problem-solving methods such as 5 whys, A3 reports and root cause analysis typically start with observation at the gemba, examining the actual machine, part and conditions involved, sometimes summarised as gemba, gembutsu and genjitsu: the real place, the real thing and the real facts.
A gemba walk is not an inspection or audit aimed at finding fault; its purpose is to learn and to support improvement. Effective walks have a clear focus, follow up on what was observed, and respect safety rules, personal protective equipment requirements and restricted areas. Remote dashboards and video can complement but not replace direct observation.
