5S
5S is a lean workplace organisation method named after five Japanese words, usually translated as sort, set in order, shine, standardise and sustain, which together create a clean, orderly and visual workplace where abnormalities are easy to see.
The five steps are seiri (sort), removing items not needed for the work; seiton (set in order), giving every necessary item a defined, labelled place; seiso (shine), cleaning the area and equipment, which also serves as inspection; seiketsu (standardise), defining the rules and visual standards for the first three steps; and shitsuke (sustain), building the discipline and routines to keep them. Some organisations add safety as a sixth S.
5S is often the first lean method introduced because it makes waste and problems visible: missing tools, leaks, excess inventory and damaged equipment stand out in an orderly area. It reduces searching and walking time, supports safety and quality, and provides the foundation for standard work, visual management and total productive maintenance. It applies to production cells, maintenance workshops, warehouses and offices.
The main challenge is sustaining 5S rather than performing a one-off clean-up. Regular audits with simple scoring, clear area ownership and management attention help. Shadow boards, floor markings, colour-coded labels and photographs of the standard condition are common visual tools. 5S should not be treated as housekeeping alone; its purpose is to support reliable, efficient and safe work.
