Battery Electrode Manufacturing

Electrode manufacturing is the first stage of lithium-ion cell production: active materials are mixed into a slurry, coated onto metal foil, dried, calendered to the target density and slit into strips for cell assembly.

Active material, conductive carbon and binder are mixed with a solvent into a slurry. Cathode slurries commonly use N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) with a PVDF binder, while graphite anode slurries are commonly water-based. The slurry is applied to aluminium foil for cathodes or copper foil for anodes, often by slot-die coating, and dried in long ovens, with solvent recovery for NMP. Calendering rolls then compress the coating to the target thickness and porosity, and slitting cuts the coils into electrode strips.

Electrode quality largely determines cell capacity, power, life and safety, and the coating and drying steps are major contributors to the cost and energy use of cell production. Uniform coating weight and thickness across and along the web are therefore critical.

Inline measurement systems monitor coating weight and thickness, and optical inspection detects defects such as pinholes, streaks, agglomerates, edge defects and foil damage. Moisture and contamination must be controlled, and NMP handling must follow occupational health and environmental rules. Dry electrode processes that avoid solvents are being developed and introduced to reduce drying energy.
