Asset Administration Shell (AAS)
The Asset Administration Shell is the standardised digital twin concept of Industrie 4.0, providing a vendor-neutral structure of submodels that describe an asset's identity, technical data, documentation and operational information.
An AAS is associated with a specific asset, such as a motor, machine or production line, and contains submodels, each covering an aspect such as nameplate data, technical data, documentation, carbon footprint or time-series data. Submodel templates published by the Industrial Digital Twin Association (IDTA) standardise common aspects so that different software can interpret them. An AAS can be exchanged as a file in the AASX package format or served through standardised APIs, and it can be mapped to OPC UA.
The AAS was developed within Germany's Plattform Industrie 4.0 and is now maintained by the IDTA, with international standardisation in the IEC 63278 series. Manufacturers use it to deliver machine documentation and data in a consistent digital form, to support engineering and commissioning, and to exchange information along supply chains, for example for digital product passports and product carbon footprints.
Adoption requires agreement on which submodel templates to use and how identifiers are assigned. Passive AAS files carry largely static information, while reactive implementations expose data through APIs. Open-source tools, such as those of the Eclipse BaSyx project, help create and serve AAS content. The AAS complements protocols such as OPC UA rather than replacing them.
Key points
- Industrie 4.0's standardised digital twin structure
- Organised into submodels such as nameplate, technical data and documentation
- Submodel templates are published by the IDTA
- Exchanged as AASX files or served through standard APIs
- International standardisation proceeds in the IEC 63278 series
Where AiVibe comes in
AiAmbA IoT is AiVibe's edge protocol layer: it discovers devices and normalises industrial signals, with supported protocols including Siemens S7, Mitsubishi MC, Delta Modbus, OPC UA and MQTT, and driver availability confirmed per installation. Writes to machines are deny-by-default.
