Work Offset (Work Coordinate System, G54 to G59)
A work offset stores the distance from machine zero to the chosen part zero, so the program can be written in part coordinates. FANUC-style controls select the standard work offsets with G54 to G59.
A work offset defines a work coordinate system by recording where the part datum sits in machine coordinates for each axis. When the program calls an offset such as G54, the control adds the stored values to every programmed position, so the same program runs correctly wherever the part is clamped. FANUC-style controls provide G54 to G59 as standard and many offer additional extended offsets; other control families use equivalent datum or preset tables.
Work offsets let one program run on different fixtures, allow several parts or fixtures on one table to have their own zero, and support tombstone and pallet work on horizontal machining centres. They are set by touching off with an edge finder or tool, by workpiece probing cycles, or by entering values measured on a setup fixture.
An incorrect or wrongly selected work offset is a frequent cause of scrapped parts and collisions, so setup procedures normally include verifying offsets before cutting. Probing reduces manual entry errors and can also measure rotation of the part. Offsets should be recorded with the setup sheet so that a job can be repeated, and changes to them during production should be controlled and traceable.
Key points
- Stores the part zero position relative to machine zero for each axis
- G54 to G59 are the standard work offsets on FANUC-style controls
- Set by touch-off, edge finders, probing or measured fixture values
- A wrong offset is a common cause of scrap and collisions
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory: edge devices plus AI agents that let people talk to CNC, PLC and robot controllers in plain language. Agents only propose changes, and a trained operator confirms each one.
