Toyota Production System (TPS)
The Toyota Production System is the integrated manufacturing and management approach developed at Toyota, built on the two pillars of just-in-time production and jidoka, and the main source of the methods now known as lean manufacturing.
TPS was developed at Toyota in the decades after the Second World War, with Taiichi Ohno as its best-known architect, building on ideas from Sakichi Toyoda and Kiichiro Toyoda. It is often drawn as a house: the roof is the goal of highest quality, lowest cost and shortest lead time; the two pillars are just-in-time, producing only what is needed when it is needed, and jidoka, building in quality by stopping when an abnormality occurs; and the foundation is levelled production, standardised work, kaizen and stability.
TPS methods such as kanban, andon, heijunka, standardised work and quick changeover spread to other vehicle manufacturers and then to many industries, especially after Western researchers studied Japanese automotive productivity. Toyota treats TPS as a way of thinking that relies on respect for people and continuous improvement, with front-line teams expected to identify and solve problems.
Taiichi Ohno's book Toyota Production System: Beyond Large-Scale Production is a primary source on its philosophy. Attempts to adopt TPS often fail when organisations copy visible tools without the underlying problem-solving culture and stable processes. Just-in-time also assumes reliable suppliers and logistics, so many manufacturers hold safety stock of critical components where disruption risk is high.

Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory as the OEM: edge devices plus AI agents that let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Existing lines are retrofitted with edge devices, and a trained operator confirms every change an agent proposes.
