Software Composition Analysis (SCA)

The automated identification of open-source and third-party components in an application, including transitive dependencies, to detect known vulnerabilities, licence obligations and outdated or unmaintained packages.

SCA tools read package manifests and lock files, such as those used by npm, Maven or pip, and can also scan binaries and container images to build an inventory of components and versions. Each component is matched against vulnerability databases, including CVE records and ecosystem security advisories, and against licence information. Results show which direct and transitive dependencies carry known vulnerabilities and which versions fix them.

Modern applications are assembled largely from open-source packages, so a vulnerability in one widely used dependency can affect a very large number of products, as the Log4Shell vulnerability in the Apache Log4j library showed in 2021. SCA supports patching decisions, helps legal teams manage licence compliance and produces data for software bills of materials. Vulnerable and outdated components form a category of the OWASP Top 10 2021.

Not every vulnerable dependency is exploitable in context, so reachability analysis and Vulnerability Exploitability eXchange (VEX) statements help prioritise. SCA finds only publicly known issues and depends on the quality of vulnerability data and component identification. It is combined with automated dependency updates, policies for approved components and protections against supply-chain threats such as typosquatting and malicious packages.
