Service Level Objective (SLO)

A service level objective (SLO) is an internal reliability target for a service, such as the share of successful or fast requests over a period, measured by a service level indicator and used to guide engineering priorities.

A service level objective (SLO) is a target value or range for a measurable aspect of a service's reliability over a defined period, for example the proportion of requests answered successfully within a latency threshold over 30 days. It is measured with a service level indicator (SLI), a precisely defined metric such as availability, latency or error rate. A service level agreement (SLA) is a contractual commitment to customers, usually with penalties, and is normally set less strictly than the internal SLO.

SLOs translate reliability into terms that matter to users and give engineering and business teams a shared basis for decisions. The gap between the SLO and perfect reliability forms the error budget: while budget remains, teams can release features and take risks, and when it is exhausted, effort shifts to stability. SLOs are central to site reliability engineering and are increasingly applied to data pipelines and machine-learning inference services.

Good SLOs are few, user-centred and measured as close to the user as practical, such as at the load balancer or with synthetic probes. Targets should reflect what users need rather than what systems currently achieve, and should be reviewed as services change. Alerting on fast error-budget burn rates gives earlier, less noisy warnings than alerting on raw resource metrics.
