Security Orchestration, Automation and Response (SOAR)
Technology that connects security tools and automates repeatable investigation and response tasks through playbooks, helping security teams handle alerts faster and more consistently.
A SOAR platform integrates with SIEM, EDR, firewalls, identity systems, threat intelligence sources and ticketing tools through APIs. Playbooks define sequences of actions for a given alert type: a reported phishing email, for example, can be parsed automatically, its links and attachments checked against intelligence sources, matching messages removed from other mailboxes and a case opened for an analyst. Each step can be fully automated or require human approval.
Security operations centres adopt SOAR to reduce manual effort on high-volume, low-complexity alerts, shorten response times and ensure that procedures are followed consistently and documented. Case management features record evidence and actions for later review and compliance. Many SIEM and XDR products now include SOAR capabilities rather than requiring a separate platform.
Automation is only as good as the process behind it; poorly designed playbooks can amplify mistakes, such as isolating a critical server because of a false positive. High-impact actions usually keep a human approval step, and in OT environments automated containment must be evaluated against safety and availability requirements. Benefits are measured through analyst time saved, mean time to respond and the share of alerts handled automatically.
Key points
- Connects security tools through APIs and automates playbooks.
- Speeds up triage of high-volume, repetitive alerts.
- High-impact actions usually require human approval.
- Increasingly built into SIEM and XDR platforms.
