Public Key Infrastructure (PKI)

The set of roles, policies, software and hardware that issues, manages and revokes digital certificates, binding public keys to identities so that systems can authenticate each other and establish encrypted connections.

In a PKI, a certificate authority (CA) verifies an identity and signs an X.509 certificate that binds it to a public key. Trust flows from a root CA, whose private key is highly protected and often kept offline, through intermediate CAs that issue end-entity certificates for servers, users, devices or code. Relying parties validate the chain of signatures up to a trusted root and check revocation status through certificate revocation lists or the Online Certificate Status Protocol.

Public PKI underpins HTTPS, with browsers and operating systems deciding which root CAs to trust. Private PKIs issue certificates inside organisations for Wi-Fi and VPN authentication, mutual TLS between services, email signing and device identity in IoT and industrial systems; OPC UA, for example, uses X.509 certificates to authenticate applications. The ACME protocol, defined in RFC 8555 and used by Let's Encrypt, automates certificate issuance and renewal.

Many PKI problems are operational: expired certificates causing outages, weak protection of CA keys, unknown certificates scattered across systems and slow revocation. Automation and an accurate certificate inventory are therefore essential, particularly as the CA/Browser Forum shortens the maximum lifetime of publicly trusted TLS certificates. Long-lived industrial devices also need plans for certificate renewal and for migration to post-quantum algorithms.
