OT Patch Management

OT patch management is the risk-based process of evaluating, testing and installing security updates on industrial control systems, coordinated with vendors and production schedules, with compensating controls where patching is not possible.

OT patch management is the process of identifying, evaluating, testing and applying security updates to industrial systems, including operating systems, control applications, controller firmware and network devices, in a way that does not disrupt safe production. Unlike IT, where patches are often deployed automatically and quickly, OT updates usually need approval from the control system vendor, testing on representative systems and installation during planned maintenance windows.

Many industrial systems run for decades, and some cannot be patched at all because the vendor no longer supports them or because changes would require requalification of validated or safety-related systems. Asset owners therefore prioritise by risk, considering exposure, exploitability, consequence and whether a vulnerability is known to be exploited, drawing on vendor and government advisories such as those published by CISA. IEC TR 62443-2-3 provides guidance on patch management in the IACS environment.

Where patching is not possible or must wait, compensating controls reduce risk: segmentation, restricting access to vulnerable services, application allowlisting, monitoring and disabling unused functions. Good practice keeps verified backups before changes, tracks patch status in the asset inventory and coordinates closely with operations, the OEM and qualified personnel. Patching any safety-related system follows the OEM documentation and the site's functional safety management procedures.
