Object Storage

Object storage is a scalable storage architecture that keeps data as objects with metadata and unique identifiers in flat buckets, accessed over HTTP APIs, and is widely used for backups, data lakes, media and archives.

Object storage is a data storage architecture that manages data as objects, each consisting of the data itself, metadata and a unique identifier, stored in a flat namespace of buckets or containers rather than a file hierarchy. Objects are accessed over HTTP-based APIs, and the Amazon S3 API has become a de facto standard that many other services and on-premise products also implement. Providers replicate objects across devices and often across availability zones for very high durability.

Object storage is used for backups and archives, data lakes, media files, website assets served through CDNs, log retention, machine-learning datasets and model artefacts. In industry it holds inspection images, sensor data exports and historian archives. Services include Amazon S3, Azure Blob Storage and Google Cloud Storage, while MinIO and Ceph provide S3-compatible object storage on-premise.

Objects are typically written whole rather than edited in place, so object storage suits large files and write-once, read-many data rather than databases or frequently updated files. Storage classes trade retrieval speed against cost, and lifecycle rules move ageing data to cheaper tiers or delete it. Security depends on bucket policies, blocking public access, encryption and versioning, and object lock features provide retention that helps protect backups from ransomware.
