MQTT 5
MQTT 5 is the version of the MQTT protocol standardised by OASIS in 2019, adding reason codes, user properties, shared subscriptions, message and session expiry, topic aliases and other features for larger, more manageable deployments.
MQTT 5 keeps the publish-subscribe model and packet structure of MQTT 3.1.1 but adds properties to most packets. Reason codes on acknowledgements tell clients why an operation succeeded or failed, user properties carry custom key-value metadata, and message expiry intervals let brokers discard stale messages. Session expiry replaces the clean session flag with finer control over how long the broker keeps a disconnected client's state.
Shared subscriptions let several subscribers in a group share the load of one topic, with each message delivered to only one of them, which helps scale back-end consumers. Topic aliases reduce bandwidth by replacing long topic strings with short integers, request-response properties support command patterns, and flow control and maximum packet size limits protect constrained clients and brokers. These features suit IIoT systems with many devices and cloud integration.
Brokers and client libraries must both support MQTT 5 to use its features, and many brokers accept 3.1.1 and 5 clients at the same time. Mixed fleets are common, so the protocol version used by each device, gateway and application should be documented and tested. Enhanced authentication in MQTT 5 enables challenge-response mechanisms beyond a simple username and password.
Key points
- OASIS standard published in 2019
- Reason codes and user properties improve diagnostics and metadata
- Shared subscriptions spread one topic's load across a consumer group
- Message and session expiry give finer control of stale data and state
- Enhanced authentication supports challenge-response methods
Where AiVibe comes in
AiAmbA IoT is AiVibe's edge protocol layer: it discovers devices and normalises industrial signals, with supported protocols including Siemens S7, Mitsubishi MC, Delta Modbus, OPC UA and MQTT, and driver availability confirmed per installation. Writes to machines are deny-by-default.
