AiVibeMetalworking Fluid (Coolant) and MQL
Metalworking fluids cool and lubricate the cutting zone, flush chips and protect parts against corrosion. They range from neat oils and water-based emulsions to synthetics, and are delivered by flood, high pressure or minimum quantity lubrication.
Neat cutting oils give strong lubrication, while water-miscible fluids, including soluble oil emulsions, semi-synthetics and synthetics, give better cooling. Fluid can be applied as a flood, through nozzles at high pressure, or through the spindle and tool to the cutting edge. Minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) instead delivers a very small amount of lubricant in compressed air, and some operations run dry with an air blast.
The right fluid and delivery method improve tool life, surface finish and chip evacuation, and help control thermal distortion of the part. Through-tool coolant is especially valuable in deep-hole drilling and in machining heat-resistant alloys, while MQL and dry machining reduce fluid handling and disposal and are used, for example, in some cast iron and aluminium machining.
Water-based fluids must be maintained: concentration is commonly checked with a refractometer, and pH, tramp oil, filtration and microbial growth need control. Skin contact and inhalation of mist can harm health, so safety data sheets, local occupational health rules and extraction measures govern use, and disposal must follow environmental regulations. Interrupted cooling can cause thermal cracking of carbide edges, so some milling operations are better run dry.
