Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT)

Liquid penetrant testing, also called dye penetrant inspection, is a non-destructive testing method that reveals surface-breaking defects in non-porous materials by drawing a coloured or fluorescent liquid into the defects and then out onto a developer.

The process follows a defined sequence. The surface is cleaned to remove contaminants that could block defects. A penetrant is applied and left for a dwell time, during which capillary action draws it into surface-breaking discontinuities. Excess penetrant is removed from the surface without washing it out of the defects, and a developer is applied that draws penetrant back out, forming visible indications larger than the defects themselves. Colour-contrast penetrants, typically red on a white developer, are inspected under white light, and fluorescent penetrants under ultraviolet light for higher sensitivity.

PT can be used on most non-porous materials, including non-ferromagnetic metals such as aluminium, austenitic stainless steel and titanium, as well as ceramics and some plastics. It is widely applied to welds, castings, forgings, machined components, turbine blades and aerospace parts, and its simplicity and portability make it common for field inspections.

PT detects only defects open to the surface; subsurface flaws need other methods. Surface preparation is critical, because paint, oxide, oil or metal smeared by machining can close defects, and porous or very rough surfaces produce background indications. Dwell times, removal methods and process controls must follow a written procedure, and the chemicals require appropriate handling and ventilation. ISO 3452-1 specifies general principles for penetrant testing.
