Industry 4.0 & Manufacturing Operations
Industry 5.0
Industry 5.0 is a concept promoted by the European Commission that complements Industry 4.0 by placing human-centricity, sustainability and resilience at the centre of industrial transformation, rather than efficiency and productivity alone.
Industry 5.0 describes a change of purpose more than a new technology wave. The European Commission framed it around three core values: a human-centric industry that adapts technology to the needs and wellbeing of workers, a sustainable industry that reduces resource use, energy consumption and waste, and a resilient industry that can withstand disruptions such as supply chain shocks. It builds on Industry 4.0 technologies rather than replacing them.
In manufacturing, the concept is often linked to collaboration between people and machines, for example collaborative robots that share a workspace with operators, assistance systems that reduce physical and cognitive strain, and decision support that leaves judgement with skilled staff. It also connects industrial digitalisation with circular economy goals, energy efficiency and the ability to reconfigure production quickly when demand or supply changes.
Because Industry 5.0 is a policy and research framing rather than a technical standard, there is no single definition or certification. Organisations typically translate it into measurable objectives such as ergonomics and safety indicators, energy and material intensity, and recovery time after disruptions. Human-robot collaboration must still follow the applicable machinery and robot safety standards, such as ISO 10218, however human-centric a design is intended to be.
Key points
- Framed by the European Commission around human-centric, sustainable and resilient industry.
- Complements Industry 4.0 technologies instead of replacing them.
- Emphasises collaboration between people and machines and support for worker wellbeing.
- A policy and research concept, not a technical standard or certification.
Where AiVibe comes in
AiVibe designs and manufactures the AiAmbA AI Factory as the OEM: edge devices plus AI agents that let people talk to PLC, CNC and robot controllers in plain language. Existing lines are retrofitted with edge devices, and a trained operator confirms every change an agent proposes.
