Endpoint Detection and Response (EDR)

Security software that continuously records activity on endpoints such as laptops and servers, detects suspicious behaviour and enables analysts to investigate and contain threats remotely.

An EDR agent on each device captures detailed telemetry about processes, file changes, network connections, registry changes and user activity, and sends it to a central platform. Detection combines behavioural rules, threat intelligence and machine learning to spot techniques such as credential dumping, suspicious script execution or ransomware-like mass file encryption. Analysts can search historical activity, reconstruct attack chains and respond by isolating hosts, stopping processes or quarantining files.

EDR emerged because signature-based antivirus could not reliably stop fileless attacks, living-off-the-land techniques that abuse legitimate system tools, and previously unseen malware. It is now a standard control for corporate endpoints and servers, a key data source for SOC monitoring and managed detection and response services, and a frequent requirement of cyber insurers.

EDR needs careful deployment and tuning to balance detection against performance and false positives, and agents must be protected against tampering. Unmanaged devices, network appliances and many industrial controllers cannot run agents, so they need other controls such as network monitoring. A widely reported 2024 incident, in which a faulty content update to an EDR product crashed millions of Windows computers, also highlighted the importance of staged update practices.
