AiVibeData Diode (Unidirectional Gateway)
A data diode, or unidirectional gateway, is a hardware-enforced network device that lets data flow in only one direction, typically from a critical control network outward, making inbound attacks through that path physically impossible.
A data diode, also called a unidirectional gateway, is a network device that allows data to travel in only one direction, enforced by hardware. Typical designs use a fibre-optic link with a transmitter on one side and a receiver on the other but no return path, so data cannot be sent back. Proxy software on each side converts protocols that normally need two-way handshakes, such as TCP-based historian replication or file transfer, into a one-way stream.
In OT, data diodes let plant data flow out to enterprise or cloud systems for monitoring and analytics while preventing any traffic, including attacks, from reaching the control network through that path. They are used in nuclear power, electricity grids, oil and gas, water and defence, and are a common choice for conduits leaving high-criticality zones. Some regulators and national security agencies recognise or recommend unidirectional technology for the most critical systems.
Because nothing can be sent back, data diodes cannot carry remote control, acknowledgements or software updates into the protected network; those require separate, carefully controlled paths. Applications must tolerate one-way transfer, and the software on each side still needs hardening and monitoring. Products differ in how they replicate specific industrial protocols and databases, so compatibility with the systems involved should be verified before deployment.
