Canary Release

A canary release rolls out a new software version to a small share of users or servers first, monitors its behaviour against the existing version and widens the rollout only if metrics stay healthy.

A canary release is a deployment strategy in which a new software version is first rolled out to a small subset of users or servers while the rest continue on the current version. Metrics such as error rate, latency and business indicators are compared between the canary and the baseline, and the share of traffic on the new version is increased in steps only if it behaves well. If problems appear, traffic is routed back and only a small group of users is affected. The name refers to canaries once used in coal mines as an early warning of toxic gas.

Canary releases are common for large web services, mobile back ends and APIs where real production traffic reveals problems that testing misses. Traffic splitting is done with load balancers, service meshes, feature flags or Kubernetes progressive delivery tools such as Argo Rollouts and Flagger, which can automate promotion and rollback based on metric thresholds. Software updates for device fleets are often staged in a similar way, starting with a small group.

Canary analysis needs good observability and enough traffic for a meaningful comparison, otherwise problems are missed or false alarms trigger rollbacks. Both versions run side by side, so database schemas and APIs must stay compatible, and session affinity may be needed so that a user does not switch between versions. Compared with blue-green deployment, the approach limits the blast radius but takes longer to complete.
