AI Agent

An AI agent is a software system that uses an AI model, typically a large language model, to pursue a goal by planning steps, calling tools or APIs, observing the results and deciding what to do next, rather than answering a single prompt.

An agent runs a loop: the model receives the goal, context and descriptions of available tools, decides on an action such as searching documents, querying a database or calling an API, receives the result and continues until the task is complete or it needs human input. Memory stores relevant information across steps or sessions. Function calling and protocols such as the Model Context Protocol connect agents to tools and data.

Agents automate multi-step work: triaging support tickets, investigating alarms by pulling data from several systems, preparing maintenance work orders, writing and testing code, and answering questions that require combining information from databases and documents. In industrial settings, agents can let people query machine data in plain language.

Agents can take wrong actions, loop or be manipulated through prompt injection in content they read. Good practice limits tool permissions to the minimum, requires human approval for consequential actions, logs every step and evaluates agents on realistic tasks. Agents connected to physical equipment must never bypass control or safety systems.
