Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP)
Advanced product quality planning is a structured framework, originating in the North American automotive industry, for planning and verifying the quality of a new or changed product and its manufacturing process, from concept to production launch.
APQP was developed by Chrysler, Ford and General Motors and is published as a reference manual by the Automotive Industry Action Group (AIAG). It organises development into five phases: plan and define the programme, product design and development, process design and development, product and process validation, and feedback, assessment and corrective action. Each phase has defined outputs, such as design FMEAs, process flow diagrams, process FMEAs, control plans, measurement system analysis, preliminary capability studies and production trial runs.
APQP coordinates cross-functional teams from engineering, quality, manufacturing, purchasing and suppliers so that risks are identified and addressed before production starts, when changes are cheaper. Automotive customers commonly require suppliers to follow APQP or an equivalent process, with status reported at defined gates, and the approach is also used in other industries that launch complex engineered products.
APQP is a planning framework, not a set of forms, and its value lies in early risk reduction rather than document completion. The AIAG core tools associated with it are APQP itself, FMEA, measurement system analysis, statistical process control and the production part approval process, with the control plan as a key output. Launch readiness is typically confirmed through PPAP submission and approval.
